We as a society are on the edge of a Green Revolution. Concerns for our environment as  a planet and within the walls of our own homes are becoming of great concern as we learn more about the everyday toxins we are exposed to. Consciousness is also being raised about what we dispose of when we throw things away and where it is going.

Many items items we dispose of can be of great use to others or to ourselves if we can recycle, repurpose or give our unwanted items to other to utilize.

This idea of being socially responsible and balancing the sustainability of People, Planet and Prosperity is moving right along with the Green Building and Remodeling Movement. Many new ideas are being born on how to reuse items that would fill a landfill to make beautiful and purposeful things for our homes. Things such as recycled glass or porcelain countertops, glass tiles, reclaimed woods, and even recyclable carpet made from recyclables!

Some think building green or remodeling green has to be expensive. While some technologies and products are new and have high price tags there are several options available that are very inexpensive and in many cases even free!  Plenty of things you can do to increase the energy efficiency of your home for example  can be hugely offset by rebates offered by your local utilty companies and credits from the federal government. And you reap the rewards of the reduced utility bills year round.  Smart, easy and cheap ideas like composting and rain water harvesting are fun, relaxing hobbies that benefit your family and the environment.

As a seller in a market like the one we are currently in making some green changes can make your home stand out amongst the crowd making your home more marketable if you hire a professional realtor  who can effectively market those benefits to potential buyers.

As a buyer there are options available if you would like to build or buy green. Since it is a relatively new concept you may want to consider retrofitting or remodeling an existing home to make make it more green. Although it may be a bit of work the options and ideas you have to choose from are endless and it can be very fun and exciting to do!
